Glossary of Terms

Apodyterium  Changing room in the Baths 
Apse  A semi-circular or polygonal end to part of a building                
Basilica   Part of the Forum and Basilica complex.  The Basilica was the administrative centre. The Forum court in front of it was surrounded on the other three sides by a range of rooms
Circa  About the time of/around 
Caldarium  Hot room with hot bath in the Baths 
Calleva Atrebatum  The Roman name for the town, translated as ‘The Woodland town of the Atrebates’ 
Capital  The decorated head of a column 
Channelled hypocaust  A method of heating a room. The floor had a solid foundation into which deep channels were cut. Hot air from a furnace circulated in these and warmed the floor above 
Doric  A style of classical architecture 
Euterpe  The Muse of music and lyric poetry 
Forum and Basilica  The Basilica was the administrative centre. The Forum court in front of it was surrounded on the other three sides by a range of rooms 
Flagon  A vessel used for holding liquids, with a narrow neck and usually a globular body, a footring and one or more handles 
Flue  Channel for conducting heat 
Frigidarium  Cold room with cold bath in the Baths 
Graffito/Graffiti  Mark or marks on a container or object.  These include names, numerals and even phrases.  Some were scratched onto the surface after the manufacturing process was completed, but some marks on clay tiles or pottery were inscribed before the object was fired
Hypocaust  Underfloor heating system fed from a furnace 
Insula  The grid of streets divided the town into areas. These were given insula numbers for the purposes of excavation and recording.  Roman numerals were used and this is the convention by which the areas are still identified
In Situ  In the original place of discovery 
Lararium  Household shrine 
Latrine  Toilet 
Ogham  Script of late or post-Roman date which is based on vertical and horizontal lines 
Pilae Hypocaust  A heating system in which the floor is supported on columns of pilae (stacks of tiles).  Hot air circulated around these and warmed the floor above
Portico  Colonnade serving as a porch to a building 
Quernstone  A stone used to grind  wheat grains into flour
Sudatorioum  Hot dry room in the Baths 
Tepidarium  Warm room in the Baths 
Vitam Tibi  Motto on a pottery beaker of late second to early third century date. Translated as ‘long life to you’, a drinking toast similar to ‘cheers’
